Bell Street Park

Bell Street Park

completed: 2014

Merit Award, 2016 Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects with MIG-SvR; Honorable Mention, Seattle Design Commission 2014 Design Excellence Awards

In response to a community desire for more green open space for this growing, already dense Belltown Neighborhood, HEWITT in collaboration with SvR Design and the City transformed a four-block street right-of-way into a first-of-its-kind linear public park corridor. By reclaiming vehicular travel lanes for pedestrian use, elevating the road to eliminate curbs, and mixing bicycles, pedestrian, and cars to create a shared space, the community gains a vibrant, green, and much needed safe open space.

Salvaged granite curbing was reused for seating perches; new street trees and increased plating areas manage stormwater; and integrated public art and addition of pedestrian-scale lighting define the new park.

Bell Street Park was recently awarded a Merit Award for "General Design over $500,000 Construction Budget" by the Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
