“This Galleria is but a small sliver of our city, but by making the most of what a small space can offer, we hope to make a difference in your day.”
These words greet visitors and employees alike in the activated space between two Amazon buildings in South Lake Union. Amazon’s Bigfoot and Nessie buildings – designed by ZGF Architects – adds office and retail to the South Lake Union neighborhood; the interstitial Galleria creates a destination with a large landscaped public green space bookended by water features and scattered with sculpted seating unified under an glass canopy installation by artist Spencer Fitch.
On the rooftop, employees have access to stadium-like seating among lushly landscape edges. Stormwater from the roof channels down to a tiered rain garden that not only filters runoff water, but also provides a multi-sensory benefit to building occupants. Along the street edge, a designated dog relief area supports a healthy landscape as well as provides an amenity for local pets.
