The Federal Way Transit Center is designed to be a community landmark. The Transit Center has 12 bus platforms as well as dedicated bus layover space. A 400-foot long translucent canopy provides a pleasant and safe bus waiting area. Safety and accommodation were key design criteria for the 1,190-space garage.
HEWITT worked with the City of Federal Way, Sound Transit, King County Metro, and the community in resolving issues of scale and aesthetics and to devise appropriate passenger amenities including covered walkways and bus shelters, bicycle storage, and public art. Collaboration with the public artist for this site, part of the Sound Transit art program, began with the conceptual design of the station. The transit center connects to the Town Square Park to the west. In addition the new Federal Way Performing Arts and Events Center to the northwest. As well as City offices to the east and nearby retail and restaurants being within walking distance.
Public art at the Transit Center include Lightgrove Rootshadows, Chronolog, and Seed Leaves installations by artist Clark Wiegman.
