Mercer Island Station evolved through unique design constraints. The train trackway leading up to the station is located on one of the longest floating bridges in the world, taking over what used to be the I-90 HOV lane and utilizing the existing infrastructure to accommodate sustainable and equitable public transportation.
Since the station had to fit between the east and westbound I-90 highway lanes, the design team decided to stack the station program in order to minimize its footprint. The building cantilevers over the train trackway with “saddle bags”, giving the station its unique shape.
The station connects the city center of Mercer Island to Bellevue, Seattle, and beyond, providing residents with new sustainable transit options to employment and entertainment destinations throughout the region. Pedestrians and bicyclists have direct access to the station entrances from the adjacent I-90 trails.
This station is served by two entrances from the street level onto the platform. The glass station entrance buildings act as beacons to the neighborhood with large cantilevered roofs that provide weather protection, a welcoming gesture to patrons.
