The underground Capitol Hill light rail transit station is located in the heart of the Broadway commercial district. Near future plans for transit-oriented development (TOD) and a desire for direct pedestrian access from the neighborhood and local transit connections influenced the station’s design development.
Three unique entrances were developed to respond to high patron traffic and create a smooth and easy flow from the street environment above to the transit platform below. The station entrances include plazas to support adjacent retail and commercial spaces. All have clear sightlines and circulation elements that allow an intuitive understanding for patrons.
The Capitol Hill Station connects one of the City’s largest urban centers to Downtown and responds to Sound Transit and Capitol Hill community design goals to sustain the vitality of the Broadway District and create iconic station entries. Since its opening, light rail ridership has doubled.
